Bengali movie 'Sanjhbati' !
Being in Hyderabad for quite sometime we were missing
Bengali Movies .However after coming back we took the very
first opportunity to watch Sanjhbati by Saibal Banerjee and
Leena Gangopadhyay.
The story of the film circulated around the prevailing situation
faced by two generations. An old lady whose son was settled
abroad lived alone at their house in Salt Lake. She had two
helpers or caretakers who took good care of her. A relation of
of faith and understanding developed between them. She also
had close relation with an old friend and a lady advocate.
However a local goon (promoter's agent) was after the prime
property. Her son and daughter-in -law repeatedly asked their
mother to come and stay with them. But the lady depending
upon her husband's pension & friend decided to stay back . Sweet
memories of her husband & growing up child etc. chained her .
She found their touches in every corners of the house.
The goon tried every trick to uproot her. Finally on the Diwali
night -knowing she was a heart patient- he along with his gang
fired heavy decibel crackers just beside the house. In spite of the
strong requests & objections by the two caretakers- they went on
with their sinister design. The lady collapsed and died.
Later her son along with the goon and the lady's old friend and
her advocate had a meeting. As expected the property was to be
handed over to the promoter. Suddenly the advocate produced
a Will made by the lady. The house was in her husband's name
and she being the owner decided to gift it to the caretakers.
Finally after a lot of drama the caretakers tore the Will and left
the house forever.
Nothing more to say about the renowned senior actors. They
have already become icons ! About Dev and Paoli it could be
said that they have shown that -given the opportunity- they
could adapt to uncommon roles too.
Wide angle photography is indeed commendable !!
The main plot - village people -although they too need
money- are not entirely devoid of love & respect for
the elders. Money has not been able to spoil them entirely !
