North Kolkata Calling !!

New York Times and Authors Guild have accused 2 tech companies of freeriding. Authors Guild first took the initiative to go to court. New York Times, the American media outlet, filed a suite against them in the Manhattan federal court too. Their accusation is also against OpenAI and Microsoft for violation of copyright. They believe that content created by someone else is being used without any permission or proper payment!   Wonder if content creator will finally get justice !!      Of course , whenever a new technology came, there was always a two sided effects.... Hence ,when Narayana Murthy or Nandan Nilekani applies AI to help the Indians to get rid of poverty, it might be a boon to many underprivileged.      

There were three of them named Geeta, Parvati and Janki. They went to gather fodder in Boom forest range of Chanpawat district. The incident happened last Tuesday afternoon. Without warning a tiger pounced upon Geeta and started dragging her towards the dence forest.The tiger took her almost 40 metres away before the other two could react. However the two brave ladies now swiftly attacked the tiger with their sickles and sticks. They even pelted stones in their desperation to save their friend. Finally the tiger left Geeta who was bleeding profusely.She was taken to a hospital in Tanakpur where ,at present, she is recuperating. Salute to those brave ladies! .

It was almost decided that the movie would have the two greatest stars - Shahrukh Khan and Leonardo DiCaprio. The film was to be directed by Paul Schrader (the screen play writer for Taxi Driver). The producer Martin Scorsese   too was looking forward to   its complition. Even the name of the film 'Xtreme City ' was selected. Strangely and unfortunately the entire event didn't work out.                

Various times various percentages are declared as under poverty line.Wonder what do we feel when we come along those statistics. Few, except those who suffer desperately...i repeat  desperately.... desperately in the truest sense. No money, no food, no medical treatment in this pitiless world. When one could see the very humanity ending before them. Their only wish remains upon The Almighty. How many of us have ever seen or felt The Almighty's strength and His will to fulfill the pains of the....? Now Mr. Narayan Murthy & Mr. Nandan Nilekani probably have that ".Great Realisation." Did we at last found our Gods?                  

Men like Narayan Murthy and Nilekani are showing paths to commoners to make money. Not only that but to make money within few days and that too a lot of money. We wonder , simply wonder !  Is it philonthrapy ? A lot of questions however remains.

He found himself in jail for a crime he never committed. It was a murder case and he was only 18 then. However he came out on bail after enduring two years behind bars. Since then 12 years have passed. In the meanwhile he prepared himself completely to fight his case. He is from UP's Bhagpat and his name is Amit Chaudhary. He decided to study Law and finally completed his BA, LLB and LLM. After passing the Bar Council's exam he pleaded and argued his own case and won. He proved himself innocent at last. What a tenacity !!

Zamindars used to patronize these pigeons.They spent a lot for the pleasure they derived from pigeons flying.  Still we could see the above pictures in some places of the city.There are some pigeon flying clubs too.

If someone is found frequently setting fire in his/her balcony what should be our repercussion ? Probably we would ask the person for an explanation. We might even think that the person needs to be treated for such abnormality. In fact such a thing had been happening for quite sometime in a Dum Dum housing complex. A homemaker,named Deepa, had been creating such ruckus for few months. She has been warned by the neighbours but she went along with her misdeeds.On 5th December '23 finally her neighbours confronted her directly for such an act. She reacted by threatening them with her kitchen knife. The matter reached a climax when she suddenly stabbed herself.The Nager bazar police station team immediately shifted her to a private hospital.  Her husband left her and she was living alone in the flat ! Is she mad?                  

My wife was to go to Dalhousie (a busy office area of Kolkata) and hence took a bus from North Kolkata. Little did she knew about recent developments inside buses. She was sitting on a back seat and soon dozed off. In the meanwhile the bus got crowded. She felt a hand mildly tapping on her shoulder. She woke up and saw a man similar to the conductor. He also had a pouch type bag hanging from his shoulder. She , without looking at his face , gave her a fifty rupee note and said 'Dalhousie'. Meanwhile,someone next to her, picked up a conversation. After few moments she tried to find the conductor for her ticket and change. The man was gone. Finally she came to know of her mistake. The original conductor too showed little interest in the matter. Was he aware of the incident??

Anxiety in cancer patient is indeed very painful. Not only the patient but the whole family suffers from anxiety when they are in such a situation. Yet there is hope for such painful situation. Music therapy is one among them which could stop anxiety and give some relief to the patient. My Music is more important than any thing in the World. It appease my intellectual spirit. It brings calmness to all my tensions.It gives me hopes to look forward To me it is like God's blessings.

The century old Maniktala Tower Clock, once again goes Tic Toc ! Thanks to our city based Heritage enthusiasts.  Mudar Patherya who took the responsibility, quite easily convinced the bazar committee, the owners of the building & the tenants who too came forward with their support. The support of the former police commissioner Soumen Mitra & the Burtolla Police Station OC Debasis Datta too inspired Patherya move on with the scheme. To complete the job Rs2 lakh is required which has been raised through crowdfunding.

Known to be the most famous painting in the world -it has   frequently raised questions.  Now scientists have discovered another feature of Leonardo da Vinci's work. The Artist seemed to be in an experimental mood while painting this famous work of his. This time the oil paint he used to prepare the base layer was of a difference nature. Technically each of his paintings were different -said Victor Gonzalez the leading chemist at CNRS, France. They used X-rays to find out that the Artist used Plumbonacrite, a lead oxide byproduct, in to thicken the primary layer.

A local funeral home in Reading, Pennsylvania has been the home of a thief, who died in 1895. The undertaker accidentally mummified him and thus he had been lying for 128 years. He was famously known as ' Stoneman Willie'. The people of the town finally thought that enough was enough. On this Saturday they finally buried him.                                

Ever heard of faeces being used for jewelleries ? A woman from lowa wanted to do exactly that. She collected it from Kenya and took it along in her luggage to US. US federal customs, however, spoiled her plan. The lady told the official that she had already used moose poop for jewelleries in the past. Giraffe poop is allowed to US after proper permits and inspections. The official explained that such things might bring disease to persons wearing such jewelleries. Hence the matter should have been declared before !

People are fed up with bedbugs in France. Viral posts purported to show them in cinemas, seats of trains etc. They are discussed in the TV talk shows,streets and everywhere . Households in Newyork, Paris and other important cities too are infested with bedbugs.This is probably due to the boom in international travel of the people. President Macron Goverment in  various meetings tried to reassure  the people that the City of Light will not be turned into a City of Bites .               

Wonder why obscene pictures often appears in various sites. How to stop these.

We are all aware that Skydiving requires tremendous stamina, skill, endurance etc. Hence young men & women, possessing such stamina, are expected to participate in such daredevil sports-if it could be called a sport at all. What will be our reactions if we find elderly men & women competing in such events. An old man named Dorothy Hoffner from Chicago, aged 104 years did exactly that though it was a tandem dive.  He jumped off and landed 13,500ft later at Northern Illinois airport. What an achievement at such a ripe age. A big salute to the hero.

We have often dialed a wrong number, said 'sorry', and put our phone down. Everyone of us have faced such a situation. But did we ever hear about someone killing somebody for simply dialing a wrong number by mistake! A 26 year old young man from Bihar's Bhojpur inadvertently dialed the number of his neighbour. Bhulchul, the neighbour, had a heated argument with Rakesh who dialed his number. Around 9pm he came to his house and started beating Rakesh mercilessly.The unfortunate man died on the spot. LOW PATIENCE is leading us where? Towards which end ?

Recently watched a movie where Ajay Devgan is seen with a cigarette in his lip. It shows a pilot's tension while his passengers are in trouble. Ajoy played the the role of  a pilot who had a lot of experience, flying for many many hours.  However, as it happens, the Aeroplane that he was flying was in danger , as the weather was against. He is often seen, out of tension, holding a cigarette in his lips. When asked he says that he has not Lighted it. Finally when he overcomes the danger, he lights his cigarette, though not in the Plane ! Did he release his tension by smoking a cigarette, afterall !

Alexa and Siri are developed by different companies. Amazon gets the credit of Alexa while Apple's credit is Siri. What can they do for you? Well like assistant they can set up reminders, answer questions, play music etc. Alexa's skill in other field is also remarkable. Siri, on the other hand, can send text messages, make phone calls etc. Both are using applications poered by Artificial Intelligence.                    

He lost his father and was defeated in the panchayat poll. He was terribly grief stricken but never lost hope. He took his spade and started digging digging and digging. Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CISR) has developed a tobacco with low nicotine. To control health of smokers the nicotine content is reduced to 40-50 %. PM Narendra Modi's concern on the health of the people was shared with CSIR director N Kalaiselvi. She said that a study show nicotine content in the plant is 40 to 50% lower. At present the lab is working to lower it further by 60 to70%. Happy news for smokers indeed .                 

At least seventeen Authors including John Grishm, George RR Martin and Jodi Picoult have decided to sue Open  AI. Their point is that their copyrighted works are being used without prior permission. They filed papers in the Federal Court in New York. They further alleged that ChatGPT is responsible  for  'massive commercial enterprise ' and it relies upon 'systametic theft on a mass scale'. They further must know how generative AI plans to use their works.                  

I was around 7/8 years old when I had the opportunity to witness a program of the famous dancer Uday Shankar. The event took place in Minerva Theater and it was organized by Anath Nath Deb Trust Estate.  I went along with my mother. I don't remember much but ... Yes I faintly remember a part where the audiences were overwhelmed and clapped their hands for a long time. It was an emotional performance where Uday Shankar, like a sea began to wave his entire body!  Wee waves,which began from tips of his fingers, spread throughout his body to become huge waves, that finally hit the sea beach with tremendous force! An old man in our locality is often seen reading Newspapers. He is the only man who never refuses Kagajwalla (who buys old newspapers). As far as we know he,  along with his wife, lives in an old dilapidated house. It is a big house but in a very bad shape. They are unable to keep a helping hand as they are very poor.  To return to the fact they seldom refused a Kagajwalla. We were surprised to find Kwallas often coming out of their house. Finally we came to know the truth. They had few very old things, almost antiques, which they showed the Kwallas. Before bargaining the old man, however, somehow convinces the buyers to do some household chores.  Finally the bargain fails and the Kwallas leaves the house depressed.

Have heard a lot from friends & relatives about Aurobindo Ashram. In fact one of my friends was so impressed that he decided to spend his entire life there. His only son was around 6/7 years old & he decided to send him too. Whenever I came along the name Pondicherry I thought of Rishi Aurobindo's enlightened Life.  On entering the Ashram the very first thing that pulled me towards it-was the Samadhisthal of The Mother and Rishi Aurobindo. They were laid side by side, according to their will. When I put my two hands on it I felt like an electric shock! There were others too who touched their heads and hands. They were in deep meditation with eyes closed. Peacefulness prevailed and Silence added to their meditation. Something inside me too seemed to experience the calmness. The serenity of the place itself was  enough to transform my thoughts into a world of fearlessness and purity. Was this my second Realization, the one which I felt long ago?  Another thing that impressed

Can't help writing about Kolkata & Hyderabadi Biryani in Hyderabad. Probably Dum Maaro Dum is making sensation and they have already opened their 2nd 100 seater restaurant at Gachibowli. From the very beginning people seems to have taken a fascination on this particular restaurant! On the very first day the 100 seater seems almost full!           

On Sunday a lady named Leechin entered a shopping area.It was at  a Los Angeles Store. She pretended to be a singer. She was surrounded by few men wearing all black. People around thought that they her bodyguards. Most of them started talking selfies.  Her disguise was finally discovered and the security escorted her out. 

My wife and myself usually spend around five/six months in Hyderabad.Our son, along with his family, has been staying there for quite some time.  We sometime taste the renowned Hyderabadi Biryani. To be very honest we often miss the Kolkata Biryani.  After many years we finally got the taste here too. O Kolkata we found your Biryani here at last!  Today is a Sunday and we were planning to have our lunch outside. Finally we ended up in a restaurant   near Kukatpally with a peculiar name. In fact the very name drew us towards it. Dum Maaro Dum was the name. We casually ordered Biryani knowing it to resemble Kolkata's taste.  We were simply bowled out to find the Biryani's taste as excellent as Kolkata. In fact better in some aspects both in quality and quantity.  At last.. at last.. at last The Kolkata Biryani in Hyderabad! They guaranteed that their Hyderabadi Biryani too is good.  Yes we will find it out the next Sunday.   

The World Robot Conference was held in Beijing this week. A wide range of Robots with various uses were displayed including Surgery, Manufacturing, Companionship etc. With human like head, life like facial expression, synthetic skin, moving hands and arms were displayed at the Ex Robots booth. There were canine robots too who shook hands with the fairgoers! Some bounced ping pong balls, prepared Chinese tea and some gave back massages to the visitors.                     

Have you ever thought of sleeping on top of Eiffel Tower ? In fact no one is allowed to do so.  Yet two Americans have done just that. Of course they did it in a drunken state! They were found by the Security guards next day when they were making their final rounds before opening to public. They were found between the towers 2nd and 3rd levels. It is generally closed to public. Specialist unit & firefighters were sent to recover the nocturnal infiltrators. In India many of us perhaps heard the undermentioned joke A Master Degree holder man, after failing to get a job, finally ended up in a Zoo. The authority gave him the required advice. He was to wear the costume and show himself as tiger  to the spectators. He was doing his job quite well until a zoo worker made a terrible mistake. While cleaning he mistakenly opened the cage's second door. Now the man was facing a real tiger. He shuddered to think of the consequence. The second tiger, which looked much bigger, came right up to the costume tiger. When he thought that there was no hope... suddenly the second tiger whispered in his ear, "Don't worry I ,too ,am an unemployed youth. "  According to TOI Hyderabad Times ..The Hangzhou Zoo in Eastern China could have some bears which are believed to be humans!      .                                                                 

Remi Lucidi, known for his high- rise stunt, fell from 68th floor of Tregunter Tower Complex, Hong Kong. He was known for his extreme sports of skyscraper climbs. He got himself trapped on the outside of the top floor penthouse. While trying to concentrate in getting help  he lost his footing, fell from such height and died.               

It is extremely hard to believe how a human being could willfully turn himself into a dog!  A Japanese man named Toco spent Rs 11.6 lakh to covert himself into a dog. It was a long cherished childhood dream which he finally achieved. It took 40 days for  a Japanese Company to make his dream come true.  They created a hyper-realistic outfit of a dog. The video of Toco as a dog has gone viral!                   

I suddenly found myself in a quiet place. It was surrounded by rows of trees and bushes and had a very desolate look. As  far as l could see there was the same desolation. It was a kind of inspiration or rather an encouragement to bring out my inner emotions. In fact a perfect ambiance to practice my most loved passion- my Music ! Soon l  immersed myself in an Alaap in Raag Bairagi.My eyes were closed as the mood demanded. Around 30 minutes later l opened my eyes to find a little boy of ten standing before me. He seemed to be following my Alaap  very attentively. Wherefore did he come? thought l. The little boy requested me not to stop and carry on. For another 10 minutes l continued and the boy stood there with the same interest  and concentration. I stopped the Alaap and asked him whether he could understand my music. To my great surprise he sang the same Raaga in Drut Tentaal. For 15 minutes he sang along with Taans and Sargams including Chakradhar, Tehai etc.  (To be continued)   

Along with our family we decided to have our Saturday breakfast at somewhere else. We pulled up our car near a fashionable restaurant about a kilometre from our home in Hyderabad. We gave the required order and sat around the family table. There were few customers and so we felt comfortable. While awaiting for the food to arrive we got busy chatting among ourselves.  Some commotions  near the entrance drew our attention.We were completely bowled out to find the King Khan at the door!  After few minutes we were at our ease once again. He looked so similar and was an exact duplicate of Shah Rukh Khan, the popular film star. The actual face came out when he removed the dark spectacle.          

An Indian ship named Kamala sank near the shore of America long before the Titanic. The ship belonged to Ramdoolal Dey(Deb) who is also known as the Pioneer of Indo-American Trade Relation. He was also known as the first Bengali millionaire merchant. The American merchants were so  happy with his dealings that they together presented a painting of the then President George Washington. It is said that the President himself gave a sitting to Gilbert Stewart  who was the painter. In fact a vessel  was named after him(Ram Dolloll) which made few journies to India. Doctors in Israel has done a remarkable job by reattaching the head of a 12 year old boy to his neck. Ligaments holding the posterior base of the boy's skull were badly damaged. This detached it from the top vertebrae of his spine. All this happened while the boy was riding a bicycle and met with a severe car accident.  Dr Ohad Einav, the orthopedic specialist,with the help of a large team of doctors and paramedics, finally succeeded in completing the complicated surgery! They used new plates & fixations in the damaged area. Suleman Hassan, the name of the boy, was recently discharged and is known to be functioning normally. 

Priceless 10th century idols, stolen from a temple in Uttar Pradesh, were found in UK's garden. The rare deities were stolen in 1970 from a temple in Lokhari in Banda district. The idols were of Chamunda and Yogini Gomukhi. A Mumbai and Rajasthan criminal network were responsible for smuggling many yogins into UK and EU via Switzerland during the 1970s and 1980s. The idols are now in the possession of High Commission of India & London.                   

We have all heard of burglars stealing expensive things. In doing so they apply various innovative methods. Some uses vehicles like cars, motorcycles, vans, taxis etc.  A new and sophisticated manner was applied by 32 yrs old Sampathi Uma Prasad. He was involved in high profile jewellery thefts. He frequently travelled by plane to various places and selects the shops and locked houses. Then he takes the required informations and fixes his timings. He accomplishes the thefts and returnes back by the next flight. Whenever he ran out of money he pledged his booty for his return flight.  He was from Andhrapradesh and was to return to Kerala on 5th July. He was finally caught by the police from the airport.             

There are many types of careers nowadays. How if someone chooses to become a mermaid after leaving a lucrative job? Moss Green aged 33 yrs who lives in England does exactly that. She left her job to become a professional mermaid in Italy. She got the idea when she saw a man dressed as a 'magical merman' coming out of the sea near a beach!

A self made Chinese millionaire failed 27 times in his college entry tests. Though he made a lot of money his dream  to get a degree from a renowned University remained  unfulfilled. He is at present 56 years old and is known as Liang Shi by name. During the past four decades he has taken the 'gaokao' exam dozens of times. His expectation was to get a chance in some elite University. Unfortunately he is unable to secure a seat even in an ordinary one!              

An hydraulic jack was used to lift a three storied building.The G+2 building at that time had 16 residents inside. They were completely unaware of the owner's plan.They became aware when the building lilted and leaned on the next residential building. Fortunately no one was hurt in the process.  This happened in Quthbullapur's Chintal village-Hyderbad. Following complaint by the neighboring building the owner of the building was booked under IPC section 336.         

Perhaps we have not forgotten 'The Stoneman of Calcutta & Bombay during the end of 1980s.  Poor people sleeping at footpaths were targeted by the killer. The killer killed poor victims by hitting them in  their heads with a big stone which he often left beside. Police failed to crack down though freshly 'bludgeoned to death' cases kept pouring in.  Now the same seral killing is happening on the pavement in Mylardevpally, Hyderabad.Both the unfortunate men were sleeping around 200 meters apart on a pavement. The same happened with another man near Budvel railway station. At present cops are looking for any link between these three murder!          Mystery finally cleared by the police after examination of CCTV. The stoneman was killing his victims for the simple reason of steating their money!    

Tragedy surrounded Titanic once again. Four tourists along with their guide -were in a submersible and were in their way to explore the Titanic wreck. Unfortunately they lost all contact with the chartered research ship which was at the dive site. From the last Sunday morning when the 22feet long vessel covered more than half the way -lost all contact. The crew of five were in great danger as the oxygen might run out any moment. The vessel has a 96 hours air supply and the time is fast moving towards the end. The total dive was supposed to be around two and a half hours.  May God save them!!           

Bade Gulam Ali Khan ,known as the Samrat of the Indian Classical Music World,never lent his voice in filmy songs. It was Naushad the music director of the renowned film"Mughal-E-Azam"who first requested him to sing a Classical song for a romantic scene between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala.Ustadji naturally declined. Naushad was bent upon getting it done by Khan Shaheb only. He finally told K Asif, the director, about his wish.Next- they went together and repeatedly requested Ustadji to do the job. Just to get rid of them Gulam Ali Khan asked for a fantastic price of Rs20, 000/-.During those days (1960) renowned and much sorted Artists were payed Rs5000/-.K Asif was not daunted since he too was convinced about Khan Shaheb's ability. Paul McCartney one of the famous Beatles thinks AI has added a lot of excitement as well as fear of what it could bring. According to him there is both good as well  as bad side of it. With the help of AI they will be able to revive their last song, where late John Lennon featured. AI was used to separate his voice & piano music from his recorded demo. It is expected to be released this year -thanks to AI!

It was a Medical Shop in North Calcutta.It is now an Electric shop and beside that -it was Madan Cabin where we spent our younger days- hour after hour-debating over a cup of tea. Yes -now it is an Electric Equipment shop where few local elderly persons too spend their times just for harmless gossiping.Not only elders but young men too join perhaps to gain some knowledge of matured world.The father of the young man is probably the owner of the shop.We however never bothered to find out the owner.Our main reason to assemble there was to spend some idle moments-the moments of retired life.
